E71 is a quite common error gamers may experience with Xbox 360. And often, this problem may be accompanied with a ring of red lights on the front of the console.

What makes it differ from the more common “red ring of death” and E74 error is that this one is not caused by overheating. In fact, no one is 100 percent sure what may cause it.

The biggest suspicion lay on the dashboard and console updates problems, such as the fall update of 2006. Also, problems have been reported by some gamers incorrectly flashing their hardware or doing botched firmware hacks. These actions cause the system function improperly.

Now, answer this question: Have you ever updated your Xbox 360 recently? Have you attempted to hack or flash the firmware? If yes, there you go! It may be the cause of your Xbox 360 E71 error. If not, the possibilities are too random to be sure of.

Here are several steps you can take yourself should E71 error occurs:

1. Reset your Xbox 360. To do this, enter the dashboard, go to the right-most column, press the “Initial Setup”, then follow the on-screen instructions.

2. If you cannot view the screen properly, hold the “Y” button on your controller as you switch the console on. This may restore the default settings.
